ABC News reported upon a controversial case this evening. At the age of eight years old British boy Connor McCready weighs 218 pounds and is nearly four times the average weight for his age.
Connor’s mother insists that she is trying to restrict his eating, I have no doubt this is a mammoth task! He reportedly snacks every 20 minutes, however his mother refuses to put a lock on their fridge and has no plans to stop him eating junk food. Does this not beg the question as to how serious she is about her child’s health? Long-term the future will be bleak for Connor if severe action is not instigated immediately.
There has been much debate surrounding this case. It is certainly not a matter to be taken lightly, particularly concerning Connor’s health. Some have, however, been suggesting that with the extent of Connor’s obesity it really is a form of child abuse.
I’m not sure how I feel about this to be honest. To state his mother is being abusive would be an extremely strong statement. However, we must consider the fact that if Connor continues on this path his natural lifespan may be drastically reduced and his chance of living a “normal” life unlikely.
What are your feelings on the matter of childhood obesity? Can it be said that obesity in children is a product of biology, or merely bad parenting?
