Our Distorted View of Beauty!

We are constantly bombarded with discussions about fashion models and extreme dieting. But how did our idea of beauty become so distorted?

Check out this video, it may give you a clue:

This video is brilliant! It proves why women and men, shouldn’t be so concerned with their appearance! However, it makes me wonder, is Photoshop just a little too good at making models look perfect? It really troubles me that children, young women, and adults, for that matter, are being effected by the media in this way.

Whatever your views, this video is amazing to watch! Visit Dove’s Campaign for Real Beauty.

  1. I can’t tell you how powerful that video is! Our view of beauty is so incredibly skewed that it’s shocking. No matter where you look (mens mags, womens mags, tv, movies, etc) we are bombarded by the “idea” women.

How are little girls supposed to gain any self confidence when they are always being compared to a fake woman?!?!

Saman - I know, it is totally shocking! It makes me sick to think about the children who are sucked in by this. Is this why there is such a rise in eating disorders…surely it must be contributing, as no-one seems to know what ‘natural beauty’ is anymore!!!

I get on my high horse on this subject! :-/

This is a good commercial, I put it up on my site a while ago and have seen it quite a few times now. The Photoshop part is always fascinating - how they can totally alter the size and shape of her head and lengthen her neck.

Another short film in the same vain is ‘Doll Face’. It’s a bit scary but ultimately makes it’s point well about striving for beauty that is unattainable.

  4. That’s quite a powerful video. Sadly relative to the people that don’t, very few people realize this as they grow up. They think that to fit in, you have to be like everybody else.

I mean really, if you don’t like yourself for who you are, you can’t expect others to like you. Be who you want to be and not what media tells you to be, nor what you think others want you to be.

Frank - thanks for your comment! I checked out the video too, it’s a bit freaky, but gets the point across. Thank you for that!

2Perfect - I agree totally! The media have a lot to answer for in my view!

I appreciate the input from you both!! :-)

Now I’ll feel better about myself in the morning :)
On a more serious note, they should show that short on a giant outdoor screen during Fashion Week. I’m glad you posted!

Kali - I agree with you, that would be a brilliant idea for Fashion Week, I think people need to see this video..it may change their whole view to ‘beauty’!!

  8. Hi - thanks for stopping by The Diet Pulpit (don’t be a fool, eat for fuel)! I’m glad you liked my advice and lyrics for “Stop in the name of health before you kill yourself”

It’s a great tune to have stuck in your head to keep you focused on Health! Having the song title on the refrigerator is also a great reminder to make you think before opening that door and eating when you are not really hungry.

I truly LOVE the Dove true beauty videos and their message. I hope everyone who hears about them gets one and watches it with their children, and get a few extras to pass on to teachers and girl scout leaders too (they are FREE). I wish there was something equivalent for boys and men too - weight loss and self esteem are not just issues women deal with.

Lady Rose I agree totally, there should be an equivalent for men…maybe we could suggest it to them. If they had enough suggestions, they may take it on board??

  10. Good video. I agree with you and this is destroying young lives.
