I’ve just been reading Mike Kinnaird’s brilliant article The Great Goji Juice Controversy, where he discusses Goji facts, nutrition, the Goji scam, and much more. It’s a really great article, and if your interested in this topic head over and check it out.
While discussing the nutritional content of the berry, Mike makes the point - does anyone really care what nutrients are in foods, other than to say “yep, this is good for me? Very good point I think! He quotes from Doug Graham when he said:
“You should eat bananas, because they’ve got banana in them.”
I love this, and it’s exactly my type of thinking! We don’t need to worry about the exact nutritional content of the banana, we should just eat it! Nearly every week I hear people saying, we should be eating X, as it can ‘cure’ Y and Z. Aggg, sometimes it drives me crazy!
Personally, I eat because I enjoy the experience, and also because I know that my body needs a variety of different foods to achieve overall nutrition. But, I rarely get bogged down with the actual nutritional content of my meals, for example, the specific antioxidant content etc.
Don’t get me wrong, every day I advise people on the best foods to eat, and not to eat, for particular conditions. However, I feel that the world has gone a bit mad as far as “superfoods” are concerned. The fact that retailers, and manufacturers are making mega bucks from the promotion of these foods, adds further to my frustration.
Obviously, if you’re deficient in a specific nutrient, you may want to focus on a particular food, or group of foods, to re-establish that balance, however as Mike states, it’s best to cover all the nutritional bases, and leave the rest for our bodies to sort out - they are already amazing at doing this!
Here endeth my rant!! More on that later!
I’d love to hear your thoughts? Please get involved!
