We all know that following a healthier lifestyle can help to prevent or delay illnesses such as, heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and obesity. But, it seems that often it’s the women who are more vocal about healthy eating, cooking, and disease prevention, while men are more likely to be discussing their favourite sport, or the latest gadgets, and really don’t say a great deal on the subject of health and nutrition.
So, I’ve been inspired by this to look at a few tips for helping dad live a healthier lifestyle!
1) Go with what you have initially
If dad likes particular foods, such as salads, vegetables, and nuts, then be sure to serve these regularly. If he dislikes wholegrain bread for example, why not try one of the white varieties with added wholemeal flour as an alternative? Try to encourage variety in the diet by introducing new foods often. Some foods can be disguised in meals, such as grated carrots in curries, or mashed white beans in minced beef, but take care not to put him off completely.
2) Slice fruit into smaller bit sized pieces

Have you every wondered just where the misinformation comes from in the world of health and well-being? I imagine it would be impossible to estimate the number of diet and exercise myths out there, and often it’s very difficult to know what to believe. As a dietitian this is a challenge I face day by day, and I’m often left wondering whether an article I’ve read is credible enough to be used in my daily practice.
Choice are a non-profit organisation, who have committed themselves to researching on behalf of consumers, in an attempt to present the truth. This seems like quite a task! However, they have some really great articles on a range of different topics, and in particular some interesting articles on the myths surrounding exercise.
You’ve probably heard people say, “Anything is better than nothing,” in terms of the amount of exercise required. While this is true, if you’re really serious about achieving better health, a little extra effort may be required.
So, what are your exercise requirements?

I’ve just been reading Mike Kinnaird’s brilliant article The Great Goji Juice Controversy, where he discusses Goji facts, nutrition, the Goji scam, and much more. It’s a really great article, and if your interested in this topic head over and check it out.
While discussing the nutritional content of the berry, Mike makes the point - does anyone really care what nutrients are in foods, other than to say “yep, this is good for me? Very good point I think! He quotes from Doug Graham when he said:
“You should eat bananas, because they’ve got banana in them.”

For Day 5 of my fitness challenge, I decided to break the recent routine of workouts, by taking a brisk walk. Walking is, without a doubt, my favourite form of exercise, as no equipment is needed, and it gives us a break from being indoors to benefit from the lovely sunshine, and fresh air!
What are some of the health benefits gained from regular walking?
- Weight management
- Helps to control blood pressure and/or blood sugars
- Can decrease the risk of heart disease
- Increases our metabolism
- Improves muscle strength and flexibility
- Helps our concentration and memory
