Such stupid suggestions.

Keep food nearby? listen to a podcast?

Learn a new skill?

If you're driving in bumper to bumper traffic, I'm sure the listening experience is much enjoyable compared to comfortably sitting at home without worrying about killing yourself behind the wheel..

I remember driving the long miles in Australia very well. I certainly don't think anything of driving across N. Ireland now :-)

I drive the same sort of car that taxi drivers use - Ford Falcon BA on LPG gas = comfortable, big, power steering, quite a long wheel base and very cheap to run.

I'm certain that I wouldn't have lasted as long as I have, if it wasn't for the car. (Driving ~1,000 kms per week)

Hey Davey,
These are great tips. I like your idea of buying a comfortable car. I think that's probably an often overlooked point, but it really makes such a difference.

When we got back from Australia, we changed from a Corsa (my first little car!) to a Vectra. I know, a Vectra's hardly luxury. But, it's a vast improvement to drive, and I don't get pains in my arms now, like I did with the old car, when driving longer distance!

I like to keep the stress levels high... seriously, just kidding. My tips that I'd add:

1) if you're going to be commuting for the long haul, bite the bullet and buy a good comfortable long-base car that flows over bumps
2) run your vehicle on something like LPG so you're not stressing over how much money you're losing on fuel costs.
3) know the roads and what lanes you should be at certain parts of the journey.
4) drive to avoid rush hour like the plague. Start late and finish late if you can do it.

Hi Susan,

Yes, unfortunately it depends on where you live and also which route you have to take, as to whether the journey is stressful or not.

As I said above, I used to travel in London, and some of the bus routes were particularly busy, then you would get another bus and the journey would be relaxing. But, yes I understand it's not for everyone.

Did you travel with a book or some music? Would that have helped?
