With food prices rising, stock markets crashing and interest rates soaring, you could be forgiven for thinking good deals on credit cards are a thing of the past.
Despite the media trying to convince us we’re nearing some kind of financial apocalypse, this is not the case. There’s still a wealth of reward-packed credit cards waiting to be snapped up, with seven of the best cherry-picked below.
#1 Woolworths Everyday Money Credit Card
This brand new card offers a fantastic introductory rate of 0% p.a. on new purchases until February 2009, making a great choice for those looking to splash the cash over Christmas.
The card offers 55 days interest-free credit on purchases, and there is no annual fee charged in the first year (from then on the yearly charge is $49).
Those looking to transfer an outstanding balance will receive a special rate of 5.99% for the first six months, with the regular APR for both balance transfers and purchases standing at 18.99%.
The card also offers a points system, where holders gain points whenever they spend which can be redeemed in Woolworths, Safeway, BigW and sister stores.
#2 Tesco Clubcard Credit Card
A good one for those wishing to cut credit card debt by transferring a balance from another card, the Tesco Clubcard Credit Card offers 0% on balance transfers until 2010, charging a 2.9% fee on all money moved.
Purchasers also receive 0% on all items bought for six months, with the typical APR on the card standing at 16.9%.
Customers are awarded points when they spend with this card, which can be used in Tesco stores to save on items bought, converted into air miles, or used on Clubcard deals, which can be redeemed against holidays and restaurants among other things.
#3 Wal-Mart Discover Card
This card offers up to 1% cash back on all new purchases, meaning owners make money when they spend money.
Purchasers can get up to $100 cash advance when they spend on the card (this appears on credit card statements like a purchase) and save 3¢ per gallon at participating Wal-Mart petrol stations.
There is no annual fee for this card, and the APR is 12.37% - 22.37%.
#4 Sainsbury’s Credit Card
Perfect for those struggling with rising food prices, this card offers 0% on all Sainsbury’s shopping for 12 months. The card also gives 0% on all other shopping for three months and 0% on balance transfers for 10 months (with a 3& handling fee).
The APR stands at 15.9% and purchasers also earn Nectar points on all items bought, both in Sainsbury’s and elsewhere. Nectar points can be redeemed in store or can be used against a wealth of benefits – including days out, holidays and shopping – at the dedicated online Nectar store.
#5 Asda Credit Card
With a typical APR of 17.8%, the Asda Credit Card also promises free home delivery when holders spend £99 or more on groceries in store.
The card offers 0% on balance transfers for nine months, 0% on purchases for three months and 2p off every litre of Asda fuel.
Purchasers also earn Asda points when using the card – in any store, not just Asda - which convert into money-off coupons that can be used in store.
#6 M&S Credit Card
Offering 0% for 10 months on purchases and 0% for six months on balance transfers, the M&S card is a safe bet.
APR is typically 15.9% and Marks and Spencer points – which are redeemed in store – are earned with each pound spent.
M&S card holders also receive a free copy of Your M&S Magazine and Home Catalogue and can buy their travel money commission free and without the typical 2% charge in store.
#7 John Lewis-Waitrose Partnership Card
With a typical APR of 16.9%, this card also offers 0% on balance transfers and purchases for six months.
Card holders receive points whenever they spend money on the card, which are transferred into vouchers and sent to card holders three times a year. The vouchers can be redeemed in John Lewis, Waitrose and ocado.com.
