Focus on What Truly Matters
Since having Elissa I’ve been taking a break from most of my work to simply enjoy being a mum.
When I think about working full-time again and being a mum, things start to feel a bit overwhelming – how can I continue to work, but at the same time be the best mum and wife I can possibly be?
No doubt, it’s gonna be tough!
Perhaps I need to refocus on what’s truly important to me, I certainly don’t want to be working on projects that don’t represent my life goals.
At times I think we do things in life that are extremely important to us, but we also do those things that don’t matter to us at all.
So, how do we define and focus on what truly matters?
Here are a few questions which help us focus on what truly matters…
Try a bit of mental time traveling to picture where you want to be:
- What does your life look like ten years from now?
- How healthy do you want to be?
- What job do you want to have?
- How much time do you want to spend with your family?
Looking ten years down the road and imagining what you want helps focus your energies today to make these things happen tomorrow.
For example, if my future daydream is filled with thoughts of spending time with my family, then that tells me I need to focus on maintaining these relationships right now.
Let’s face it, there’s probably not enough hours in the day to do everything, but there might just be enough hours to do those things that interest us most, those things that truly matter.
Remember, if what you’re doing in life doesn’t have meaning to you, it’ll be difficult to stick with; perhaps it’s time to let go.
Making time for your goals
Do you already know what truly matters in your life? Sometimes finding time is the main issue.
Here are some tips to help you make time for what truly matters:
1. Do it first
I’d suggest picking your 3 most important tasks or goals and concentrating on them first thing in the morning.
This works for so many areas in life, I’ve found it particularly helpful to get some exercise into my day. Working on your personal goals first thing in the morning, helps you begin your day positively, which tends to set the tone for the day ahead.
2. Schedule it in
If you’re really busy, you may find it helpful to schedule important stuff into your Google Calendar, or something similar.
Then it’s important to treat these appointments with the same seriousness as the rest in your schedule. Think it as a commitment to your future health and happiness.
3. Treat it as an emergency
Treating your goals or your life mission as an emergency is a great way to accomplish things when otherwise you’re getting nowhere fast.
Ask yourself what’s eating up your time each day? Are there things that could be cleared from your schedule to make way for more important tasks?
Remember, every day you spend on tasks that don’t matter is a day you won’t be able to recover – to me that seems like an emergency!
I believe that identifying, focusing on, and spending time on what matters to you, is what truly matters.
BTW Happy New Year everyone…
