There are so many of us who are looking to live a happier and healthier life. But if you’re anything like me, the idea of going on a diet has you a little less than enthused.
To be successful in weight loss, as with any other big change, starting small, going slow, and being consistent is the key to success.
So instead of starting another fad diet, start small with dietary changes that you can sustain, that you enjoy, and that are good for you.
Simple ways to cut calories
Here are some ways you can simply and easily cut calories from your diet each day without really noticing.
1. Coffee
If you use full cream try switching to 2%, 1% or skim milk to color your coffee. Also if you add sugar try reducing the amount you add gradually working your way down to 1/2 of what you’re adding now.
It’ll take a bit of getting used to but it’s worth it, especially if you drink a lot of coffee during the day.
2. Sandwiches
If you’re a fan of sandwiches consider making them open face, made with only one piece of bread. You can easily cut out about 100 calories by doing this.
3. Butter
Cut out butter where you can. Try low calorie sandwich spreads and margarine as alternatives.
4. Meat
Choose lean or extra lean cuts of meat. Also, did you know that a serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards? This shocked me since it’s a far cry from what you’re typically served in a restaurant.
5. Soda
If you must have soda limit your consumption as much as possible. You can add a bit to your favorite fruit juice or try drinking flavoured sparkling water as an alternative.
6. Ice cream
I love ice cream, but there are some really great alternatives to ice cream that taste just as good. Try low fat ice cream, ice milk, frozen yogurt, or sorbet.
7. Snacks
Instead of chips, cheesies and pretzels try air-popped popcorn. Leave out the butter and add some herbs or spices for a bit of a flavor boost.
8. Eat real food
The easiest way to cut calories is to know exactly what you’re eating.
There are some really simple, healthy and tasty meals you can make with minimal ingredients and very little time. Check out these 5 ingredient, 5 minute meals for inspiration.
9. Chocolate
If you are a chocoholic, or have a sweet tooth, don’t deprive yourself. Instead of eating an entire milk chocolate bar try one square of dark chocolate.
It’s richer so you won’t want as much of it, and it also has some positive health effects.
10. Salads
Try substituting one meal each day with a salad. Don’t limit yourself to the same old salad day after day. Get creative.
Add different nuts, berries, fruit and vegetables. Add cooked chicken if you have some leftover from the night before. Lentils and couscous add great texture and a different flavor. Try different types of lettuce and give baby spinach a try if you you’re looking for an alternative to lettuce.
Experiment with dressings as well, try olive oil, lemon juice, orange juice, lime juice, balsamic vinegar, garlic, salt and pepper, herbs, and spices in different combinations to suit your taste.
There are numerous ways to cut calories throughout the day without really noticing. The above are 10 simple ways that I routinely use to cut calories from my own diet. I’ve successfully adopted these changes to my own eating habits and I don’t feel deprived in the least.
I’m always on the look out for more food alternative, or substitution ideas, so if you have any please share them in the comments…

I use some of your tips myself (I really love popcorn with nutritional yeast) and one of my favourite ‘ice creams’ is the recipe from her: http://www.choosingraw.com/this-post-will-change-your-life/
It’s really easy to make and it tastes delicious.
Other things I do to reduce my calory-intake:
I substitute suger for agave syrup or sucanat (i don;t think the calories are really thát different, but it has a lower impact on your insulin-levels end therefore it’s easier to feel full.
I also substitute part of the butter in my recipes for cake/cookies/etc. for avocado or apple sauce. The avocado contains healthy fats and fiber. If I use apple sauce (mostly homemade sans sugar or sweetner) I can also reduce some of the sweetner I add, since the apples naturally contain sugars. And I never use white flour.
Thanks so much Sascha I really love your additional tips! I’ve heard of using apple sauce as a substitute for butter but never avocado, I’ll have to give that one a try. Thanks! :)
Good tips, Sascha. I haven’t tried agave syrup, thanks for the reminder.
Excellent tips Sherri, and so easy to implement. I just wanted to add – for the sceptics out there – tips 1,2,&3 might look impossible to you in the beginning. I had friends who thought so. But just give it a try for at least a week and you’ll see that your mind gets used to the reduced fat, sugar and bread.
These are all great tips that will start to show results from as early as week 1 :)
Awesome Anita, I’m glad you enjoyed it and I’m glad you can back me up ;) It’s not always easy to make dietary changes especially if you’ve been eating the same way for years, but even small changes can have huge impacts. thanks again! :)
Hi Anita,
I totally agree with you, just giving these small changes a go, without simply brushing them off as impossible is so important. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I did away with sugar in coffee (never ever did in in tea) about a decade ago – I was in a cafe one day and I forgot to bring over the sugar sachet and couldn’t be bothered going to get it so I tried it without – and it was just as nice…
I now drink a lot less coffee – seem to have gone off it. So my limit seems to be 2 cups on a good day, even none on a bad day.
I go off and on tea – mostly drinking a herbal blend without any sugar or milk.
I find water quite nice if it’s chilled – if not I just take sips here and there…
lots of other things in your article that I have followed and have found works. Still wish I could do more walking but I have an ongoing problem with my right foot which gets very angry if I walk about too much – thumping pavements doesn’t seem to help it either. Medics say it’s hard to heal – suggest upto 2yrs!
Good for you, Cathy. Most people find they drink more coffee on a “bad” day, so it’s good that you don’t feel the need to do so :-)
Very good idea will give it a try ;)
Which one? All of them? lol
