Your 7 Step Guide To Weight Loss Success

There’s no denying that one of the most sought-after pieces of information is how to lose weight successfully.

And, it’s true that lots of people want their weight loss success to happen overnight. But, what they really want is to wake up to a miraculous number on their bathroom scale — this dream is also a goal, and goals need to be focused on correctly.

So, if you want to know how to set effective goals for weight loss success, here are 7 steps:

1. Change your “right now” concept
Wanting results right away can put you on a losing streak. That’s why it’s important to change the mindset of wanting a miracle to happen.

Often losing weight is a lot of hard work, and it takes patience, but when you settle your mind to this truth, you can start thinking about your weight loss in the right perspective.

2. Come up with a master plan
Do you want to shed 20 pounds, or increase your muscle mass? Do you want to get rid of flabby arms, or focus on unsightly tummy bulges? Are you aiming to lose weight in six months, or keep exercising for health reasons?

Your goals or your master plan should be very clear-cut.

Deciding to lose 20 pounds in  three months becomes an achievable goal, as opposed to just saying “I want to lose weight!” This helps to focus your mind, and enables you to get what you are aiming for.

3. Craft a positive atmosphere
Sometimes the habits and activities we’ve been conditioned to have are painful to let go. It’s the same with trying to lose weight. There will be limitations, new activities, or even fun things which have to be cut, at least for a while.

Thus, you may feel pushed further and further towards negative thinking about losing weight. But, when you create a positive atmosphere and mindset about losing weight, things become much easier and more achievable.

So, try to balance negative vibes with more positive thoughts and responses.

4. Choose people to support you
It helps to have people who care about your goals and support you in everything you are trying to do.

Once you’ve identified those individuals who will give you their all-out support, ask them to help you out in whatever way you think would be useful.

Perhaps you have a family member who likes to cook, ask them if they have any healthy recipes they can share with you. Or, ask your partner to jog along the beach or go to the gym with you. You could even ask your friends to share any inspiring books, websites or others ideas on healthy food and activities, which they may know about.

And, take every opportunity to meet new people — that’s a great way to broaden your horizons.

5. End the bad habits
For many who end up quitting, they are sidetracked by common “dieting” pitfalls.

Some of these “bad habits” include exercising too much, or starving yourself because you want immediate results. Others get frustrated and lose motivation because they check their bathroom scale too much and see very little progress each time. It’s also common for people to go on diets they abhor, which means they instantly return to their old eating habits at the first sight of ‘tasty’ food.

These habits are no good, and do nothing to help your long-term weight loss success.

6. Chow down the right food
When you start seeing healthy changes in your body, you may feel it calls for a celebration of sorts.

But, just because you’ve lost five pounds in a week doesn’t mean you should treat yourself with a hefty meal. Sure, you’re happy to have made it through the last few months, but don’t throw it all away by overdoing things — small treats are fine, but if you know you can’t stop at a tiny piece of chocolate cake, then think about avoiding it for a little while longer.

7. Reward your success
While food rewards aren’t always a good idea, it is important to reward your weight loss success in other ways.

Tell yourself everyday how well you’ve been doing — having a positive mindset is extremely powerful. Also, make an effort to treat yourself in other ways, like going shopping, or arrange a coffee date with some friends.

That way your weight loss journey is an enjoyable experience, rather than becoming a total drudgery.

  1. People must realise they can take as long to lose weight as to put it on. Yesterday I sat opposite an obese woman in Starbucks. She was drinking a glass of chocolate with cream and cherry topping. She was probably 140 pounds overweight. Even with her obvious dedication to junk food this could have taken her over a year to achieve. To safely lose this amount of weight could also take over a year.

Hi, Arina. I loved reading your post. I agree with you that losing weight takes patience and strong determination. I believe many people have successfully lost weight by maintaining a food journal. Write down whatever you eat and you will be amazed to see how much you nibble throughout the day!

    An excellent article.

It takes alot of discipline to lose weight. It’s a combination of eating right plus getting enough exercise. Motivation is the key and the stronger your motivation, the more likely your chances of success.

      Hi Mark,
Yes, finding that motivation is often the difficultly, but when someone does, there’s really no stopping them. Like my husband’s story of how his 82 year old grandfather motivated him to get into shape. Thanks for your comment.
