I spoke recently at a local ladies meeting on the subject of looking after ourselves from the inside out.
We had a lovely evening of pampering, which included demonstrations on making face masks from ingredients in your own kitchen, as well as foot massages, manicures, facial treatments, and finally my talk.
I thought it would be good to share some of my content on how to be healthy from the evening with you, too.
How To Be Healthy
We focus a lot these days on making ourselves look good on the outside.
But, what many people don’t realize is, that what you put into your body will ultimately have an effect on how you look, how you feel, and also your energy levels.
Skincare manufacturers would have us believe that we need to purchase expensive wrinkle creams, or we must use a certain makeup, for flawless-looking skin.
However, if we follow a healthy diet plan, it goes an awful long way to improving our skin, too, and in many ways it does a lot more for us than putting some cream on a few times a day.
It’s true that eating healthy foods can actually protect, repair, and slow the aging process in relation to your skin.
So, what are the best foods for healthy, glowing skin?
Quite simply, they are those that promote good health overall.
How To Be Healthy: Diet
It is actually very difficult to sum “good health” up in a few sentences.
1. A healthy diet is colorful and varied
If you’re always eating the same foods, week in, week out, it is highly likely that you are missing some essential nutrients.
If we take fruits and vegetables as an example, when you go shopping, make sure you are choosing lots of differently colored fresh product.
Each color represents a different vitamin, and each of these have different properties within the body. That’s one reason why variety is so important.
When you think of your diet over the course of a week, ask yourself is it rich in color, or do I tend to stick with the same foods, such as potatoes, peas and carrots, over and over again?
Try to eat a range of colors each week, such as reds, orange, white, purple, green, yellows, etc.
That is the best way to make sure you are getting all of the important nutrients you need for healthy skin and a healthy body.
Fiber is also an important part of a healthy diet. Fiber helps stimulate digestion and relieve bloating. Additionally, studies have shown that adequate fiber intake may help lower cholesterol levels.
2. A healthy diet is rich in essential fats
There is so much talk these days about avoiding fat, that many people think all fat is bad.
However, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Essential fatty acids, are fats we cannot make within the body, therefore you need to eat them.
These healthy fats have so many important roles in the body, including making sure your skin is plump looking, as well as being important for heart health and mental health, amongst other things.
There are two types of essential fats, these are omega-3s and omega-6s.
Most people get enough omega-6 into their diet from the oils they use in cooking, etc. This is why you will hear more talk about increasing your omega-3 intake.
To get a healthy dose of omega-3 fats into your diet, you should eat fatty fish, like salmon, mackerel, trout, and fresh tuna, once each week.
3. A healthy diet is also high in water
Keeping yourself well hydrated is extremely important for general health, and bodily functions. It is also essential for keeping your skin looking and feeling healthy.
In fact, I’d say many people are actually chronically dehydrated, and don’t even realize it.

So, How Much Water Is Needed?
The exact amount of fluid you need varies from person to person. But as a general rule, women need about 9 cups of fluid, and men need around 13 cups each day.
The best way to know if you are hydrated, however, it to check the color of your urine.
You want it to be light in color. If it is dark, you need to drink more water.
Water is your best option as a fluid, but unsweetened tea and coffee, green tea and other herbal teas, are also an okay choice.
The water from soft drinks, fruit juices, or fruit drinks, do not count.
This is because they are packed full of sugar, which is not beneficial for overall health, your skin, or your waist line.
Green tea is a particularly good choice, and as I’ve said recently, most of the studies showing the health benefits of green tea, are based on the amount of green tea consumed in Asian countries. This is about 3 cups per day, and this is a marker you should be aiming for also.
How To Be Healthy: Lifestyle
The lifestyle you lead has a very important role to play in how healthy you look and feel, but you know that, right?
We’ve also discussed these recently in my article, Healthy Skin From the Inside-Out, but it really is worth emphasizing once again.
One of the most important things you can do to improve your health and how you look, is to get some rest.
It’s important to realize that the body needs time to heal itself. And, it actually does that best each night as we rest.
There is also some research to say that lack of sleep increases certain stress hormones, which can lead to weight gain.
For most people, eight hours per night is sufficient.
If you are highly strung all of the time, it’s going to show in your health sometime, or another.
That’s why it is so important to relax, take time out to do the things you love on a regular basis, and simply allow your batteries to be recharged, so to speak.
When I mentioned exercise during my talk, I actually heard a few groans from someone in the crowd… why is it that we hate exercise so much? :-)
However, exercise is such an incredibly important factor in making sure our lives are balanced and healthy.
Regular exercise simply makes us feel better — at least it does after we’ve finished!
It not only helps us to feel more relaxed, and to sleep better, but it also helps to brighten a dull complexion, by getting the blood pumping more efficiently around the body.
