Glyconutrients

If you haven’t heard of glyconutrients, the chances are you probably don’t have a friend or relative involved in selling them on their multi-level sales structure! Whilst I don’t think all multi-level sales are bad, I’m always a little wary of this type of marketing.

So, what are glyconutrients?

Glyconutrients apparently help the immune system by working ‘naturally’ with it, blocking bacteria from attaching to the body’s cells - if the bacteria can’t get through, they can’t make us sick.

Salt and Your Heart

Thursday 19th July is Chest Pain Awareness Day

In preparation for the BHF’s Awareness Day, I’ve decided to write a few articles on Heart Health, to be discussed over the next couple of days. Today’s topic - Salt!

What is Salt?

Salt is composed of 40% sodium and 60% chloride. When we speak of the problems associated with salt, we are usually referring to the part of the salt called sodium. Salt will often appear as ’sodium’ on food labels (6g of salt is equivalent to 2.5g of sodium).

Interestingly, sodium is unlike any other mineral necessary to humans, in that we recognise it as a particular taste, adding it in our cooking, and consuming it in processed foods.

What Nutrients are Lurking in your Cupboard?

Did you know that your store cupboard may just be bursting with essential nutrients? Canned foods are packed full with vitamins and minerals, and can be a valuable source of such in your daily diet.

Canned Food UK have produced a great resource, called “Everyday Nutrition,” detailing some of the healthy components contained in these foods. I have listed some of them below for you. Please remember this is by no means an exhaustive list!

Vitamin B12 - Essential for Vegans

Following on with my current series on vegetarian nutrition, I wanted to look at a very important vitamin, especially for vegans - B12.

Why is B12 important for vegans?

Vitamin B12 is only found in animal products, therefore in theory, those following a strict vegan diet could be at risk of developing a B12 deficiency. B12 deficiency can lead to pernicious anaemia and severe, irreversible nerve damage, therefore it’s very important that you make sure you’re getting enough into your diet.
