When was the last time you said a sincere and hearty thank you to someone for just being who they are, or for doing what they do so well? It’s often something we intend to do, but miss the opportunity, the moment passes, and it seems too late to act.
But, saying thanks can really impact the life of that person, and our own lives as well.
Over at Zen Habits, Leo has discussed some great tips for incorporating gratitude in our daily lives.
Here is a short snippet of the list, with a few added thoughts of my own:

When I began my new blogging journey roughly 7 months ago, I merely wanted to share my thoughts about nutrition, and write about something which I throughly enjoy. I could never have imagined where this journey would take me!
A number of weeks ago I was contacted by Health Central who asked me to write for them as the dietitian on their MyHeartCentral and CholesterolNetwork sites. The HealthCentral Network is a wonderful resource, which endeavors to help individuals manage and improve their health, by connecting them with health care professionals and expert patients.
I am very excited to say that I did accept this offer, and am really looking forward to writing for the network. I’m hoping to discuss a range of different topics specifically relating to healthy eating for heart disease, however I also want to discuss a range of general topics as well.

Today is World Mental Health Day. This special day is officially commemorated every year on October 10th, and is truly a great opportunity to communicate with the general public about mental health issues. Here in Australia it’s also National Mental Health Week.

In 2005 the Australian Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Christopher Pyne, said “There is no health without mental health. Physical and mental health can no longer be separated.” This is so true!

We all know that a simple health related search on the internet will return all sorts of weird and wonderful articles, ranging from highly reliable, to complete rubbish! But how do you know what information to trust? What’s reliable? What’s not so reliable? It definitely can feel like a bit of a mind field.
This is something which troubles me at times. I often search the internet, finding a range of products, books, and individuals claiming to have the secret to a healthier lifestyle. Many times such claims are made with absolutely no scientific research backing them, and in such cases I am very wary of the content.

The Scottish smoking ban has led to a significant advance in public health, according to comparisons at nine of the hospitals investigated. Research revealed there were 17% fewer admissions for heart attacks, since the ban was introduced in March 2006.
Prior to the ban, the annual reduction in heart attacks over the previous 10 years, had been just 3%. The study also added that exposure to passive smoke was down by 40% among adults and children.
Professor Jill Pell, who lead the research team, said: “The primary aim of smoking bans is to protect non-smokers from the effects of passive smoking. Previous studies have not been able to confirm whether or not that has been achieved. What we were able to show is that among people who are non-smokers there was a 20% reduction in heart attack admissions. This confirms that the legislation has been effective in helping non-smokers.”
