Why Eat Bananas?

by Melanie on September 2, 2007

Hi! I'm Melanie. A little birdie told me that possibly you aren't subscribed to this site. Are you nuts?
Subscriptions are totally free, and you can sign up either for Emails or the RSS feed. It's so easy, so do it now, and welcome to Dietriffic!

I’ve just been reading Mike Kinnaird’s brilliant article The Great Goji Juice Controversy, where he discusses Goji facts, nutrition, the Goji scam, and much more. It’s a really great article, and if your interested in this topic head over and check it out.

While discussing the nutritional content of the berry, Mike makes the point - does anyone really care what nutrients are in foods, other than to say “yep, this is good for me? Very good point I think! He quotes from Doug Graham when he said:

“You should eat bananas, because they’ve got banana in them.”

Dietriffic’s New Look - What Do You Think?

by Melanie on August 31, 2007

The new theme for Dietriffic is now up and running at last! It’s taken a few hours to iron out the problem areas today, but I think everything should be back in working order now.

I’m really eager to find out what you all think. Please leave a comment, or contact me with your suggestions.

  • What do you like/dislike?
  • What do you think of the colour scheme, and layout?
  • What about the font, and font size?
  • Is it user friendly?
  • Any other comments?

I’m looking forward to hearing from all of you! Please do leave a comment, whether you’re a regular reader, or new to the site, I’d love to hear your thoughts, and suggestions!

With the growing number of articles here at Dietriffic, I’ve had to think about a redesign of my current theme. My husband has been working very hard behind the scenes, to come up with a unique design, which will be better suited to the site’s needs. I’m really very happy with the new look, and I hope it will be much more ‘user friendly.’

We’re aiming to launch the new design later on today, and it will probably take a few hours to straighten out any problems, so please bear with us.

I’m looking forward to hearing what you think!

Increased Stigma for the Obese?

by Melanie on July 27, 2007

FriendsIt seems that a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine has been making quite a stir within the media. The study suggests that if we have a friend who becomes obese, there is an increased chance that we will also becoming obese. They suggest that this factor may be more influential than our genes, or other family members.

I do feel rather concerned about the media’s perception of what the study reports, and I wonder if this will only add to increased stigma for those currently facing obesity?

The study involved a detailed analysis of 12,067 people who had been closely followed for 32 years, from 1971 until 2003.

Some of the findings from the study include: [click here to read on…]

A new study published by the International Journal of Obesity has revealed that children from middle class families (particularly where mothers are working) are more likely to be overweight, or obese than those from lower income families.

These finding are opposite to previous studies, which stated that children from lower income households were more likely to be overweight.

Researchers at the Institute of Child Health in London followed 13,000 children to the age of three, between 2000 and 2002. They found that families earning £22,000 to £33,000 were 10% more likely to be overweight, in comparison to those households earning under £11,000. While those earning over £33,000 were 15% more likely to be overweight. [click here to read on…]
