Mums are usually right about most stuff, aren’t they? ;-)

Well, research shows us there’s certainly one thing mum got right, and that is just how important a good breakfast is each morning.

Eating a substantial, nutrient-filled breakfast is one of the best ways to ward off unhealthy food cravings, keep your weight under control, and also eliminate the fatigue we often experience in the middle of the day, as a result of our blood sugars falling too low.

Unfortunately, many of us are still inclined to grab a quick, unhealthy breakfast because of time constraints, or skip breakfast altogether. Click to continue reading »»

2012 may be the year you have decided to start eating better and moving a little more.

Fortunately, that doesn’t have to mean spending thousands on a nutritionist or personal trainer, since many of us now rely on technology to help set our eating habits straight.

And, there are literally thousands of tools available for your iPhone, T-Mobile wireless smart phone, or other mobile device, to help with food tracking, calorie counting, and motivation, on your quest for a healthier body.

Some time ago I talked a little about baby led weaning. This is the method I used to introduce Elissa to solids.

In the UK we recommend babies begin weaning onto solids at 6 months. Whenever you wait until 6 months to wean, your baby will be better able to sit up, have good head and neck control, and their hand-eye coordination has developed, so that they can grip food pretty well.

What this means is that most babies can actually manage finger foods from 6 months of age. However, most parents prefer to go onto a stage of puree for a while first.

Studies show that what we eat before, during and after a workout can have a significant effect on our energy levels, the quality of our workout, and the recovery process which follows.

Our muscles need to be properly fuelled to get the maximum benefit from the workout we’ve just completed. And, without the proper nutritional support, you won’t get the optimal “bang for your buck,” from the hard work you put in.

That said, however, if you are eating a healthy diet, and are getting enough calories to support your activity levels, you can probably rely on your own appetite, energy levels, and experience to tell you how much to eat before, during, and after a workout. Click to continue reading »»

These days there is an incredible amount of information available on what to eat for health, fitness and weight loss.

Unfortunately, a good deal of it is distorted, biased, or simply untrue.

Often, the scientists conducting studies on a given food product, or supplement, are employed by the very company which produces the product — how can they possibly be impartial?

At other times, studies are completed in a very short period of time, or are improperly carried out, producing misleading results.

This is why you need to be so careful where you get your health information from, and make sure you always examine claims with a critical eye. Click to continue reading »»
